The following message was released by Judge Advocate General of the Navy Vice Adm. Nanette M. DeRenzi and Deputy Judge Advocate General of the Navy Rear Adm. James W. Crawford III 

We are pleased to announce that Capt. Darse E. “Del” Crandall Jr., has been selected for appointment to the grade of rear admiral (lower half) as legal counsel to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Crandall currently serves as the Assistant Judge Advocate General (Operations and Management) and Chief of Staff, Region Legal Service Offices, and has served with distinction in a variety of billets throughout his career. In 1980, he became a member of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Scholarship Program at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and as a midshipman earned his silver “Dolphins” on board USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN 624 GOLD). In 1984, he earned a Bachelor of Alts degree in Economics and was commissioned an Ensign. After attending Surface Warfare Officer’s School in Coronado, California, he served onboard USS Lockwood (FF 1 064), homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, as Communications Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer from 1985 to 1987.  Crandall then transferred to the Pentagon and served as Administrative Assistant and Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Naval Warfare, from 1987 until 1989. Crandall attended Georgetown University Law Center as part of the Law Education Program and earned a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, in 1992.

After attending Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, he began his JAG Corps career at Naval Legal Service Office, Yokosuka, Japan, where he served as Defense Counsel, Trial Counsel, and Civil Law
Department Head until 1995. In 1998, Crandall attended The George Washington University and earned a Master of Laws in International Law, graduating with highest honors. Crandall’s other shore assignments include the Administrative Law Division (Code 13), Office of the Judge Advocate General; Deputy Executive Assistant to the Judge Advocate General; Deputy Legal Counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commanding Officer, Naval Legal Service Office Central, Pensacola, Florida; Assistant for Legal and Legislative Matters to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations; Special Counsel to the Chief of Naval Operations; and Deputy Legal Advisor, National Security Council.

Crandall’s afloat and operational assignments include Command Judge Advocate and Legal Department Head, USS Independence (CV-62); Deputy Force Judge Advocate for Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe; Fleet Judge Advocate for Commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet/Deputy Force Judge Advocate for Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe; and Staff Judge Advocate for Commander, U.S. European Command.
