CARAT Indonesia

By Lt. Peter Yagel, Region Legal Service Office Japan

In September, Lt. j.g. Maria Deguzman, Region Legal Service Office Japan, arrived in Surabaya, Indonesia to participate in Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Indonesia.

The U.S. and Indonesian navies came together for the 23rd Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) bilateral exercise and skills exchange, Sept. 7-13. Deguzman assisted Lt. Cmdr. Darren Myers during a presentation on Post‐War Reconstruction to a group of Indonesian naval officers. Myers and Deguzman also had the opportunity to socialize with Indonesian officers during a reception hosted by the U.S. Navy.

"CARAT Indonesia was an excellent way to help strengthen our relationship with our Indonesian counterparts via socializing and exchanging information/knowledge," said Deguzman. "It was an amazing experience and would be for any JAG officer."

CARAT Indonesia is part of a broader bilateral exercise series the U.S. Navy conducts with partner navies in South and Southeast Asia to address shared maritime security priorities, strengthen maritime partnerships and enhance interoperability among participating forces
