Earlier this fall, Legalman 1st Class Chardae M. Longshore – a JAG community member who currently serves in the legal department onboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) – was selected to be a recipient of the "Spirit of Freedom" Leadership Award.
The award is presented each year on or about Oct. 14 – the birthday of President Dwight D. Eisenhower – to a senior petty officer, who most exemplifies the exceptional vision, integrity, courage, commitment to duty, and hard work that marked Eisenhower’s career. Longshore will receive the award next month during a dinner event in Virginia Beach, Va.
“I am honored to receive the Stennis Center’s ‘Spirt of Freedom’ Leadership Award,” said Longshore. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the legal department onboard the Mighty Ike, and support the many other Sailors onboard who come to me for leadership and guidance.” “I would like to thank my chain-of-command that nominated me for such a prestigious award,” said Longshore.
In her current position, Longshore oversees completion of non-judicial punishment packages, administrative separation packages, and Military Protective Orders; provides notary services, and supports command investigations. Additionally, she serves as the legal department 3MA, the First Class Petty Officer’s Association president, the Command Victim Witness Assistance Coordinator, and much more. Ike provides a wide range of flexible mission capabilities to include maritime security operations, expeditionary power projection, forward naval presence, crisis response, sea control, deterrence, counter-terrorism, information operations, security cooperation, and counter-proliferation. Longshore also was a 2017 Legalman of the Year finalist for OJAG. During the competition, her colleagues onboard Ike effusively praised her performance.
"Longshore is my leading petty officer and she is absolutely fantastic; she really helps keeps the office together. She does everything from managing the administrative separations to organizing our captain's masts, and really touches every part of legal practice we have going on here," said Lt. Katharine Shumway, Ike's legal department division officer.
