Lt. Lauren Yutchishen – a JAG community member who currently serves as Deputy Command Judge Advocate aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) – received the ship’s annual Ethical Character in Leadership award.
The award is presented by members of the US Naval Academy’s Class of 1971, which has a special relationship with USS Theodore Roosevelt (TR) because of the commonality between their graduation year and the ship’s hull number. Members of the private group are largely retired officers of the Navy and Marine Corps. Since 2006 they have recognized a junior officer the aircraft carrier who most exemplifies exceptional ethical leadership, pride, professionalism, and dedication to duty.
“Lt. Yutchishen has been the very embodiment of a tough and empathetic leader who inspires a can-do attitude in her colleagues,” said USS Theodore Roosevelt (TR) commanding officer, Capt. Eric J. Anduze. “Her determination in holding TR Sailors to a clear standard and possessing the fortitude to carry out her duties without compromise as the Deputy Judge Advocate has garnered her my admiration and the admiration of those who work alongside her.”
Yutchishen received her Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nebraska in 2009 and her juris doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2014. Her first tour as a judge advocate took place from April 2015 to May 2017. She subsequently served as Deputy Judge Advocate at Region Legal Service Office Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia, Detachment Bahrain until May 2019.
Yutchishen was asked what advice she’d offer to her fellow Sailors, both aboard TR and around the globe. Given recent challenges faced by TR personnel – due to ongoing issues related to COVID-19 and related national media attention – her words are particularly powerful.
“Be genuine — do not put on some kind of act,” said Yutchishen. “Communicate openly, and care about your people. Open and honest communication is so important. If you have information, disseminate it. If you cannot, explain why you cannot. If someone does well, let them know. If someone needs to improve, let them know. You owe that to all your shipmates.”
