Farewell to Shirley Huffman

By Claims and Tort Litigation Division (Code 15)

Shirley Huffman will celebrate her retirement after almost three decades of civil service on Jan. 31.

Huffman started her long career of Government service as a legal clerk for the Office of the Judge Advocate General Claims Division in 1980. Huffman left OJAG in 1984 when she became civilian personnel liaison coordinator/legal assistant at the U.S. Marine Corps Basic School.

In 1985, she became the supervisory office manager at Naval Supply Systems Command. In 1986 Huffman returned to OJAG and assumed the dual-hatted roles of assistant to the division director, Claims and Tort Litigation Division, and systems analyst.  In 1997, she was promoted to computer specialist in OJAGs Knowledge and Resource Management Division.

In 2002, Huffman left OJAG to put her IT skills to work in the private sector working for Government contractors and started her own consulting firm in 2004. However, Huffman soon began to miss her Navy JAG Corps friends as well as the work. In 2006 she returned to OJAG, stepping into the role of a supervisor and administrative specialist at the newly consolidated Tort Claims Unit in Norfolk, Va. where she served until her retirement. During her tenure, Huffman received a Special Act Award, 23 Outstanding Performance Appraisals, and numerous Letters of Appreciation.
