Chief Legalman Graduates from the Senior Enlisted Academy on the Dean’s List

Chief Legalman Daniela Briceno – a valued and experienced member of the Navy JAG community – recently graduated from the military’s Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) with high honors. The SEA is a 10-week leadership development program for active and Reserve enlisted personnel from the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and National Guard, as well as from international service partners. SEA instruction is focused on management, leadership, national security, and physical fitness.

Judge Advocate Attends Oxford Course for Military and Government Lawyers

Lt. Jade Gaudet, Region Legal Service Office Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia (RLSO EURAFSWA), became the first U.S. Navy officer to attend the 2018 Oxford Course for Military and Government Lawyers. Beginning as informal training to active international and operational Royal Navy Legal Advisors, the Oxford Course is now a main component of all new Royal Navy Legal Advisers’ initial training.

Navy Lawyer Completes Summer Immersion Portion of Program for Emerging Leaders

U.S. Navy Lt. Ryan J. Sylvester, judge advocate assigned to Defense Service Office North, recently completed the Summer Immersion portion of the Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction’s (WMD Center) Program for Emerging Leaders (PEL) at National Defense University (NDU). He was selected for this program as part of the seventh PEL class of 25 members, which has representatives from across the services and the U.S. Government.

Legalmen: Why We Should Develop the Art of Writing Persuasively

With an aristocratic drawl, Bryan Garner gently informed a group of Seattle-area legal professionals that they were trained to write poorly.  In attendance at Garner’s writing seminar - in addition to civilian legal professionals - were 15 service members from Naval Legal Service Office Northwest. Indistinguishable in their civilian attire, attorneys and legalmen alike were excited to meet the legendary Garner, author of law school favorites The Redbook: A Manual on Legal Style, The Winning Brief: 100 Tips for Persuasive Briefing in Trial and Appellate Courts, and Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges (a book he co-authored with Justice Antonin Scalia).
